Crystal Lake State Recreation Area ยท Ayr, Nebraska
Crystal Lake Campground offers a serene lakeside escape where every site is positioned to frame the water. Whether you arrive by tent or by RV, the lake sets the pace โ and the silence does the rest.
About the Campground
Nestled within the Crystal Lake State Recreation Area, our campground sits along a 750-acre reservoir fed by the Republican River basin. The site was shaped by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s โ stone picnic tables, gravel walking paths, and the old-growth pines that still frame every campsite.
We are not a resort. We are a place where the water is the main event, where your neighbors are a mile of forest away, and where the only early-morning alarm is a loon calling from the far cove.
Camping Sites
Every site is a real site โ gravel pad, fire ring, and a view that does not need editing. We offer tent sites, RV sites with full hookups, and a few dispersed sites for those who want to go further from the road.
Shaded by mature pines with easy access to lake trails and a communal fire pit. Each site includes a fire ring, bear-proof storage, and a short walk to potable water and restrooms.
Spacious gravel pads with full hookups โ water, electric, and sewer. Sites accommodate rigs up to 40 feet. Pull-through and back-in options available depending on availability.
For the independent camper. These sites sit further from the main road, surrounded by native grasses and oak savanna. No hookups โ just you, the land, and the lake a half-mile away.
Reservations and availability are managed by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.

Crystal Lake supports a quiet, low-impact outdoor season. There are no water slides or crowded beaches โ just the kind of recreation that lets you move slowly and pay attention.
Non-motorized boats are welcome on Crystal Lake. Bring a kayak or canoe and paddle the far coves where the water is flat and the shoreline is wild. A small boat launch is available near the main recreation area.
Crystal Lake is stocked with largemouth bass, bluegill, and channel catfish. Shore fishing is accessible from multiple points around the lake. A valid Nebraska fishing license is required.
A network of trails winds through oak savanna, prairie grassland, and around the lake's eastern shore. Trails range from a flat half-mile loop to longer backcountry routes. Maps are available at the campground entrance.
The recreation area is part of a migratory corridor. Herons, egrets, and kingfishers are common along the shoreline. In spring and fall, waterfowl numbers swell. Bring binoculars and a field guide.
With no nearby city lights, Crystal Lake offers some of the darkest skies in eastern Nebraska. On clear nights, the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye. The lake's surface doubles as a mirror for the stars.
Covered picnic shelters and communal tables are available for family gatherings, reunions, and small group events. Reserve in advance through the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.
